i am moving into a new home, and all the walls are a medium fonted purple. is primer nessesary or can i just slap white paint over the top?Do i need primer to paint from purple to white?
Yes, you need a primer.Or you will have to use a few/many(?) coats of the paint to mute it enough to have ';white'; walls.
Your best bet is to get a tinted primer.I strongly suggest you go to a home improvement store with a paint section.Talk to someone there to find out the best color tint to use.Do i need primer to paint from purple to white?
No primer is needed. As another ';answerer'; said, primers are made to seal and to bond to a particular surface, but they usually don't cover or hide other colors very well. You'll be farther ahead with 2 coats of finish paint than you would be with 1 coat of primer and 1 coat of finish.
As to the white paint, you could try Benjamin Moore's Aura. They guarantee two coat coverage (maximum) over ANY color. It's a little more expensive, but the time you save can be worth it.
Good Luck.
no primer needed, may need a few coats of white though
if you buy the expensive kind that has a primer already in it you can do it. otherwise use primer, or do 3-4 coats of the white. if u already have the paint do a test spot and see if it bleeds thru.
You should use a primer then you won't have to use as many coats of white paint and the paint will go on better and look better.
yeah you will need primer. I used kilz to go from fuchsia to a tinted white. It took 3 coats to cover. Good luck
Depending on the primer, there's no point. Paint is made to cover, primer is made to adhere and usually doesn't cover that well. go to a paint store and have them shoot some extra white tint into the paint, it will help it to cover. If the walls are stained, waxy, glossy or dirty, mop them with tsp and be sure to wash them with clean water and let them dry before you paint. That paint with the built in primer is a lame marketing ploy, it's acrylic paint just like any acrylic paint.
Yes, otherwise, you will have to do 4 coats %26amp; still have color bleed through
just slap the paint on. don't buy cheap rubbish from b and q or whatever, get real paint from dulux or leyland
If you want lilac walls, go right ahead. There's probably some patching to do, so you'll want to prime over your patches anyway before you paint.
You can go straight over the purple with white, providing you are not using cheap paint which will lack pigment and need lots of coats. If you use Dulux you'll get away with three coats properly applied...probably.
