A wall in my bedroom is pink. How do I paint over it? A primer?

Sounds like pink is one of the toughest colours to paint over. I have to use a white base coat in a corner but the pink still comes out. I want to paint the wall light blue now. How can I do it?A wall in my bedroom is pink. How do I paint over it? A primer?
I always use exterior paint when the old colour 'grins' through. Works for me. .A wall in my bedroom is pink. How do I paint over it? A primer?
The traditional method for covering-up pink paint is to use grey undercoat. I have tried it and it WORKS

I would suggest an oil-bound type as a ';blanker ';, and your normal paint thereafter.

';sensible'; is correct in using Kitz USA as it is not obtainable in UK an alternative shellac-type in UK is ';stopping '; but it could work out very expensive as it only comes in 500 ml bottles, and is used to cover up knot holes to stop ';bleeding';
any colour undercoat before the colour of your choice
I paint for a living and I've never had trouble covering anything (even a dark purple) as long as I use a coat of primer. You only need one good coat. I prefer Killz Primer. Just prime it out, wait for it to dry and your new paint should go on just fine (two coats for even coverage).
roll a couple of coats of WHITE matt emulsion as a blocker works just fine
Two ways, Either line the wall with lining paper or persevere with several coats of a heavy bodied white U/c or Emulsion
white matt emulsion. 3 coats should do
a couple of coats of white should do it....
When changing colors in a room, I always use Kilz Primer/sealer. This gives you a true, non-splochy coat of the new color.
have you tried just painting a small area with the blue paint you want to use, you may need to do a couple off coat but it should cover it.
2 coats of blue will do it. use good quality paint, roller and brush and you will be fine.
I've just turned my kitchen from orange to light cream.... was nearly tearing my hair out after the first 2 coats, but Coat No. 3 did the trick.

Should i use oil-base or lates-base primer over existing oil-based paint if i'm planning to re-paint?

i have oil-base paint on my old wooden house (paint is still in good condition with no cracks or peeling)... since 80%-90% of the paint on the market is now latex paint, should i use oil-base or latex-base primer if i am planning to re-paint with latex-base paint?... in other words, oil-base primer is meant for oil-base paint, and latex-base primer is meant for latex paint... sooo, what will happen if i apply latex primer on existing oil-based paint, then apply a new coat of latex paint?... And, what will happen if i apply oil-base primer on the existing oil-base paint, then apply with new coat of latex paint? Last Question, what would be the recommended primer over existing oil-based paint, when i am planning to apply a new coat of latex paint? Thanks to anyone who can offer help.Should i use oil-base or lates-base primer over existing oil-based paint if i'm planning to re-paint?
Use the oil base primer it will adhere to the oil base paint presently on the house and allow proper adhesion for any type top coat paint to be applied over it.Latex primer is not recommended for priming over oil base paint and will not adhere properly. It will flake off over a short period of time. The rule of thumb is oil over oil, latex over latex, and always prime wood with oil base primer.Been in paint business for 34 years as painter and owner of business for 31 of those years,Should i use oil-base or lates-base primer over existing oil-based paint if i'm planning to re-paint?
The only primer I would use is B.I.N. shellac based.(clean your brushes with clear ammonia) or Glidden paint makes a product called Gripper. Gripper is tough stuff, I've never seen primer stick like that stuff does.

Painting cedar picket fence panels-do we need a primer coat before applying the acrylic paint?

We had to replace our white picket fence panels due to insect damage, apparently the previous owner hadn't used treated wood. When we bought the panels we were told to leave them untreated for about a month, then to paint them. While buying exterior paint I read that raw wood needed a primer before painting, but since these were ';treated'; I'm wondering if we can skip the primer part.Painting cedar picket fence panels-do we need a primer coat before applying the acrylic paint?
Yes, you should prime the wood. I worked at Sherwin Williams for 4 summers while in college. The use of primer helps the paint adhere to the wood better. Plus, it will help the paint go farther and not just soak into the wood. You will get more legs out of a gallon of paint and primer is usually a little cheaper than paint so if you use more of that it is ok.Painting cedar picket fence panels-do we need a primer coat before applying the acrylic paint?
Don't paint the fence as stain comes in many solid colors now and will water proof and prevent meldew. Go to Home Depot

cedar has tanins in that will bleed through paint. You would need a primer such as Binzer Bullseye or Kilz (check to make sure it's for cedar as they make different kinds of primers).

If you don't prime, and properly prep the wood, the paint will peel off faster than it usually does.

If it were my fence, I'd stain it or just use a UV protectant and let the cedar weather to it's natural color.

Pain in the butt to paint a fence, much easier to stain it.
I would not skip the primer but you can ask. There should be an 800 number on your paint can. Give them a call
does ';treated'; mean for bugs?

then it does not mean it is primed...so call that 800# and expect to prime

How many coats of primer and paint to paint green wall white?

2 coats of stain-killing primer and 1-2 coats of white paint should do it (unless you're going over a really dark green). How many coats of primer and paint to paint green wall white?
Probably one primer and one regular paint. Make sure you use a quality paint. How many coats of primer and paint to paint green wall white?
Depends on several things:

-The kind of paint currently on the walls. If it's latex flat water based, then anykind of paint will work. Anything else then you'll need to use the same type paint.

-Quality of paint you're using. Some cover better than others. Recommend getting Kilz brand primer. I've had success with this coverage.

-Wait til wall dries and see if the green is covered sufficiently before putting on another coat of primer.

-The final coat will then go farther and look nice. You should only need one coat of primer unless the green is dark.
Been there, done that. Took me about three coats of Kilz primer and two coats of paint. And yes you cn use the same brush or roller if you rinse it out well.

  • I need to primer my condo before I paint. Where do I go to get the best deal on a 5 gallon paint of primer?

Sometimes if you go to your local hardware store they might have clearances on 5 gallon buckets of paint that they mixed for contractors and they got the color wrong. Be sure to ask at the paint desk. The color could even be a few shades lighter then the one you're going to paint with.I need to primer my condo before I paint. Where do I go to get the best deal on a 5 gallon paint of primer?
Home depo has oops 5 gallon buckets of paint in a veriety of light color and is priced under $20. for bucket.

Do you need to put on primer before you paint a white wall?

we're planning on paiting our living room soon, and its already white, so is it necessary to put on primer of its white? some areas are a bit dirty, but other than that its pure white and we want to paint it a light colorDo you need to put on primer before you paint a white wall?
It depends on several things. For one the sheen the walls are and the sheen you want. If the walls are already flat and you are going back flat, no there is no need, paint away. Ok now, if your walls have a small shine they are probably satin or egg-shell sheen not many people paint there living room semi-gloss or gloss. If you are going back with a sheen and if you have not touched up nicks in the walls, (known as point-up) then you can probably paint without priming. If you have pointed-up then paint only those spots with a primer or flat paint, let dry and paint that spot with one coat of the satin or eggshell before you paint the whole wall or you will see the spot (known as flashing). Now, if they have a sheen and you want to go flat you can just point-up and paint, but it may take two or three coats to kill the shine. No matter what your doing give the walls a light sand to scuff up the paint, this will give it a smoother finish and will help the paint stick better. The true primer is already on the wall, only if you are trying to make it look like the Biltmore estate then you would put what is called a level 5 finish which is very costly and you would need a pro. its a in-depth process to make perfect. Go cheap and easy, lol. Enjoy.Do you need to put on primer before you paint a white wall?
For the best result, you will need to wash down the walls and get any dirt and dust off. Allow the walls to dry at least overnight. Any household cleaner works, just wipe the walls down with plain water to remove any soap or detergent residues. These could keep your paint from sticking if left on the wall. Microfiber cloths work the best for getting into all the tiny nooks and crannies!

If you didn't have any repairs to make such as filling holes or problem areas, then you should be able to paint right over the existing paint. However, if you did do any repairs, then you need to spot prime those. Feather the primer out on the edges so it ';blends'; better into the wall.

If your paint is well adhered to the wall, have no mold, water stain issues and the dirty spots came off when you washed the walls, you're good to go. However, if you have any of those issues, applying primer over those areas will take care of them. Once again, feather out the edges well.

Use 2 coats of top coat for the best result and always keep a ';wet edge'; when cutting in for the edges and along trim. What that really means is don't allow the paint to dry in those cut in areas before you roll that section of the wall or the cut in areas will show. Never cut in more area than you can roll on the wall color in 15-20 minutes. Yeah, it's easier to cut everything in at once but because the finish texture is different from a brush to a roller, the cut in areas look different when dry. Keeping that wet edge allows you to blur the lines and keeps them from being noticeable.

Now if you were going with a dark color and didn't want to do many coats, a tinted primer would help a lot. Or if you were doing a light color over a dark color, a coat of primer would ease the transition and not require so many coats of paint to cover properly. Primer has more pigment and sealing properties than regular paint and does have it's uses but it's not always a necessary thing.
No. I have no idea where this notion of priming painted walls came from, it is ridiculous.

I can tell you now that when the walls are painted in Buckingham Palace they re not primed, though they would be if they were meant to be.
    No, Just paint over it.

If the existing paint is at all glossy then you should sand it lightly with fine grit sand paper before painting.
    just paint over it
yes, since it dark. otherwise u will have to give it three coats or more

What does it mean to tint your primer the same pigment as your paint?

I am preparing to paint over some extremely old wallpaper, and in the instructions they had a ';trick of the trade'; point and it plainly said: When you buy your primer have it tinted to half the amount of the same pigment you are having them put in your paint. What does it mean to tint your primer the same pigment as your paint?
When you buy paint, the store starts with a base, and adds the pigment to get the color you selected. So if you tell the store to add half the pigment, you will end up with a paint that is close to your finish coat, but slightly lighter so you will be a ble to tell the difference between the 2, when applying the finishWhat does it mean to tint your primer the same pigment as your paint?
Wellam is right on, but have you really thought of the consequences of painting over wallpaper?

Do i have to apply primer when putting touch-up paint on my car? What is the use of it?

I read that first, you need to clean the area to be treated. Then you apply the primer, then the paint, and then the clearcoat. Are these steps correct? is it nessecery to apply primer?Do i have to apply primer when putting touch-up paint on my car? What is the use of it?
Rough up the surface with wet sanding. Then the other steps. You should use primer.Do i have to apply primer when putting touch-up paint on my car? What is the use of it?
Those steps are only correct if the paint is gone to the point to where you can see the silver of the car. Otherwise, no primer is needed.
if you want the paint to stick then yes.
If you are planning on sanding to the bare metal, then a primer should be used because most types have added chemicals that allow for better adhesion. On the majority of car bodies high strength zinc coated steel is used which is a great product but paint doesn't adhere well.Be sure to wash the steel with a strong acid then rinse with water and quickly dry before applying any type of coating.

Painting over a painted surface does not always require primer, sometimes it complicates the process for no valid reason.Primer is used to level and fill sand scratches or very minor flaws if they are present.
applying the primer will give the paint something to stick too and help you get a better finish. most touch up kits have clear instructions and if you follow them carefully and take your time you should get a nice result.

get the area to be treated nice and clean, free from water, dust and muck, then follow your kits instructions

    good luck
Wildmary, and christina, what the heck are you two talking about? Touch-up is nomenclature. There are two types of primers relevant to this discussion. One is paint primer, the other is the prep-primer that is needed with certain types of touch up paint. ';Primer';, and, ';Touch-up';, are nomenclature here folks. They are not just general terms you can throw around. So which type of primer are you asking about? The primer in a touch up kit is usually part of a two part epoxy. Which is what touch up paint is by the way, it isn't exactly paint. And, by all means, you will need to use this.

However, if you are in fact reading some third party literature on paint repair, then you likely ARE talking about paint primer.

First, let's make sure you are using your touch up product correctly. How big is the ding you are repairing? If you are trying to repair anything that will need more than a couple of small drops of touch up product, then you will get bad results. Touch up is almost useless for anything other than rock chips. Touch up is a sort of epoxy, it is NOT paint. It is paint primer, scratch filler, and pigment all in one. So make sure you are not trying to frickin repaint your whole door with this stuff, m'kay? And where is your question arising from? Are you reading the directions of the touch up kit, or do you have a touch up kit and are reading third party instructions, or are you without the touch up kit at all, and speculating based upon third party instructional info, and using the term, ';touch up';, in its general, non-nomenclature sense?

Doesn't matter. If you can make your repair successfully with a touch up kit, then do. If the touch up kit is calling for a primer, make sure they are not referring to something that is or should've been included with the kit. And by all means, apply THAT particular primer.

If you have a bottle of touch up, that you bought, or came with your car; but you are getting your instructions for its use somewhere other than the ones that came with it, likely you are seeing a reference to paint primer which you most certainly do not need.

This is not a cut and dried issue as the poster of the question has not provided enough information.

Look, paint primer is most commonly used to prepare bare metal to hold paint. If you are putting that much paint on a car, then you aint touching up anything, you are painting. If you don't know what primer is, and you are painting, you are going to be hurt, and also break about a dozen or so Federal laws. If you are going to do some useless crud like rattle-can a big blemish, then use primer. It will make the repair last 100% longer. Considering your rattle-can job will last about 24 hours, paint primer should extend this to about 48 hours. Yes, I am being very sarcastic.

If you are referring to the, ';primer';, that was, or should have been included, and you don't have it anymore, then replace your kit; because you lost half of it. Please be careful, automotive paint products are insanely carcinogenic. Even miniscule exposure can turn into a tumor in just a few days. No kidding.

Your touch up product will work without using paint primer. If you have a, ';touch up';, to do that isn't actually touch up, but repaint a panel of your car, best leave that to the pros, or live with it. Don't expect touching anything up to do much more than make a spendy mess.

P.S. My harsh tone arises out of abject terror, I don't mean to condescend. You can not believe how dangerous some of the chemicals I'm talking about here are.
The steps are correct, especially if the original paint in the affected area is damaged all the way to the bare metal, otherwise it might be possible to skip priming.

If you want a better paint adherance, you can add application of an etcher between the clean and primer step.
YES AND THERE IS A LOT MORE THAN THE STEPS THEN YOU MENTIONED ABOVE.

THE LONG AND SHORT IS THAT YOU COULD DO THE WORK YOURSELF BUT AFTER YOU ARE FINISHED REMEMBER THAT THE PAINT WILL HAVE TO BE BLENDED TO MATCH THE REST OF THE PAINT ON THE VEHICLE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE.

Yes,captsnuf is right. You could but it will last longer %26amp; look better if you put a primer. You don't need anything after.
A primer would be great like what captsnuf said, a while ago i painted my room in blackboard paint, not too sure what the manufactuer was called, but I was so impatient i just didn't bother with primers... it still looks great, i don't think there would be a huge difference with or without so it's really up to you :) if you're patient go for it! but it's not really necessary.

The only thing you need to do afterwards is let it dry :P

Be sure to sand down any wall with bad plastering etc too, good luck!

you won't fill in the imperfections from peeling paint with paint, you'd have to do a light skim coat with joint compound or a lightwieght spackle, as far a primer goes I'd use a quick dry oil like ';Cover Stain'; and I would personally prime the whole ceiling sounds to me you don't or not using a ceiling exhaust fan which leads to this problem. Unless your painting a light color over dark and/or want to get it covered in one coat ... maybe, it's kinda hard to warrant the expense of 35 bucks a gallon.
I used it. I loved it. I didn't have to prime or anything. One coat would have been plenty, but I went over once more just to be sure. And it didn't take a lot of paint to cover. I think a gallon can cost me about 30 bucks. And I still have ALOT left. Wished I'd gotten a pint instead.
Do they have samples? A lot of paint stores are now giving out samples of the product for you to test before making a bigger purchase. I'd look into seeing if they have samples or not. With mixed reviews I don't think I'd want to spend the money and risk not liking it.

  • Can white low luster exterior house paint and /or primer successfully cover silver metallic spray paint?

I'd first sand it a little to rough it up so paint will adhere to it. Usually 150-100 grit is best. Anything higher will probably leave scraches. Use Kilze or Bin primer, which are both stain killers and allow paint to adhere to it.Use a cheap paint brush for the primer because its almost impossible to get out of your brush. Make sure it is covered good with your primer first. Good luck! Can white low luster exterior house paint and /or primer successfully cover silver metallic spray paint?
if you use a proper exterior primer first yes two coast of paint one coat primer will do the jobCan white low luster exterior house paint and /or primer successfully cover silver metallic spray paint?
You can try it. You could also try a product called Kilze. It's great on covering up lots of things including water stains. After it drys, paint what ever color you desire!!
Here鈥檚 how you can do it:

To begin, clean the entire exterior surface. Use a detergent, such as TSP (trisodiumphosphate) and then rinse with clear water. If there is any flaking rust, simply remove using a wire brush.

A light sanding over the entire surface will help paint to adhere better. Clean the surface and dry.

That TSP is great stuff just wear gloves and keep from skin contact and cover surrounding area with a drop cloth. It comes in granules and you mix it with warm water.

The pros always use a white or similiar shade primer especially if you are going from a dark color to a lighter shade. It also allows the new paint to adhere to the surface better.

AND you might have to put on two coats of primer, then two or even 3 finish coats.

If its the bathroom, kitchen or an area where water and/or high humidity exist, I would definitely ask what kind of drywall, type of roller, kind of primer and the number of coats - primer and finish.

RonCan i roll on primer to drywall juts like paint?
Yes, but just ask for the right type of roller, when you go to buy it. There are different types of rollers even for different types of paint.
YES! As for drying time, check the directions on the can/pail.
Yes. Use the proper nap roller. Drying time depends on the type primer (oil/waterbased) and the temperature and humidity in the house. Check the primer container for advice.
yes you can roll your primer.as far as to the time to recoat that has a lot to do with the type primer you use if it is water base probably 3 to 4 hours if oil more like 24 to 48 depending on the temp in the room.
yes use a product called kills primer roll on just like paint

Do I need to primer my yellow house to paint it ';clay';(light brown)?...?

I am painting my house that is currently aluminum siding and I am planning on washing it with a preassure washer do I need to primer it too? do I need to rough up the siding?Do I need to primer my yellow house to paint it ';clay';(light brown)?...?
Do not use a pressure washer. The high pressure will force water behind the siding and if you get too close could even dent. TSP and a scrub brush followed by a clear water rinse with a garden hose. Start at the top and work down. Avoid spraying up, as this could also send water behind the siding.

You need a special primer to paint aluminum siding. Bare aluminum will react with most primers (including general purpose metal primers). Factory paint on aluminum siding is very hard and will not allow new paint to stick. The aluminum primer solves both problems. The primer is usually translucent and smells really bad. The topcoat is applied while the primer is fresh and slightly sticky. You may need to go to a paint store to get it.Do I need to primer my yellow house to paint it ';clay';(light brown)?...?
i would have to say yeah if you expose the bare material it wont bond to it as well it will look great for a while but after a while it will start to crack and chip primer helps bond the paint to the material you are painting so scrap any loose stuff off and prime it and then paint it

Since it is a bright pink i would guess about 2-3 coats of primer. If you go with tinted primer it'll be even less.
Probably two with a high-hide primer. My favorite is Kilz latex.
maybe 2. use the best quality you can buy
    two coats, very thin ones

, and maybe paint some white, paint before you paint the blue
do two coats.... one coat of the very best primer MIGHT do it, but two is better , no matter what kind of primer you use...
Go to a paint shop and let them help you. They have all kinds of neat ways to cover paints.
Invest in a Primer called Kilz, its the best I have ever used.

One coat ,then Paint, NO-bleeding through. Be sure to let

it Dry real good,24h. Then painter Light Blue.

    Good Color

    Have Fun.

What is the time duration i have to let the primer cure before applying the paint?

I will be using Dupli Color Engine Enamel: Flameproof White Primer (High Temp)

Im going to be starting the paint job on my 455 motor tomorrow.

Does anyone also have any experience with this product also? What is the time duration i have to let the primer cure before applying the paint?
    2-3hrs

If i have a pink wall that is my primer do i need to paint white over the pink and then paint my wall blue?

my wall is pink right now, do i need to paint it white and then paint my wall blue?If i have a pink wall that is my primer do i need to paint white over the pink and then paint my wall blue?
If the pink is primer then you are good to go. You will need two coats. And remember the she ens. Flat, eggshell, satln, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. Have fun!!If i have a pink wall that is my primer do i need to paint white over the pink and then paint my wall blue?
No, you can go ahead and paint it blue. You will probably need two coats for good coverage.
yes or else you will have a sky blue color if you dont paint white over the pink, anyways why paint it pinks cute thats the color I want I might get my wall pink
I would consult a paint store for a more expert opinion.
That depends on the blue paint. It should tell you if it needs a primer. Sometimes darker colors need priming first.

  • How do you clean latex primer off a paint brush? will gas work?

If you want to clean latex paint off of a paint brush and the paint is still wet, simply clean it with water. Rinse until the water runs clear. Once you've done that and you want to keep your paintbrush soft and supple, simply rub the bristles up against a bar of household soap. Then, using a circular motion, rub the brush bristles in the palm of your hand to get suds. Rinse clean with water.

If however, you want to clean a paint brush that has dried latex paint on it, you're unfortunately out of luck. Dry latex paint is very hard to remove from a paint brush. You can pick it of piece by piece. Or you can try goof off! but your best bet is to just throw it away...

Sorry for the bad news...How do you clean latex primer off a paint brush? will gas work?
latex primer is a water-based product. Try cleaning in warm soapy water.if the paint has gone dry, buy a product called brush restorer(i think it is made by mangers)and can be brought from leyland paints or other hardware stores. it can also be used for cleaning oil based paints. How do you clean latex primer off a paint brush? will gas work?
water is all that is needed
If the primer is still wet or semi-wet, use warm water %26amp; a lot of scrubbing!

If the primer has dried, your best bet is to throw the brush away %26amp; buy a new one.

Either way, gas is a dumb idea - it's caustic, carcinogenic, %26amp; brutal to use.
warm, soapy water should do it. if it has dried, try soaking it overnight.
    Yo Sarah

    Latex is a water-based paint

    do not use chemical compounds

it will clean up with water -- and possibly a light dish cleaning solution !! You can do clean up of all those little ';booboo's'; too with this water / dishliquid method !!

    Happy Decorating !!!
    Latex cleans up with water.
Latex cleans off with soap and water. It's ';Enamel'; that's hard
    Soap and water or turpentine.
water will clean latex primer dont use gas on latex paint
You can use either acetone or denatured alcohol; both are solvents for dried latex paint and will work fine. Acetone might be a slightly better option. I have even used acetone as a thinner for latex paint. People who think you can only use water because latex is water-based are non-creative lemmings.

Dried latex paint is very easy to remove from a paint brush using acetone. Let the brush soak in the acetone for a while and the paint will dissolve right out.

If you mean gasoline that has got to be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Blow up yourself and the entire house.
    Soap and water.

Do I need primer to paint over an old deck? There's an old old flaky coat of marine paint on it now.?

My mom calls it marine paint, she says its like an oil? Anyway, the deck was painted AGES ago and it's huge, it goes around three sides of our house. There has been an extension added to the front part that has newer, un-painted wood, but mom wants to paint the whole step and she does not want to sit there and flake and scrape off all the bits. She wants to know if she'll need primer or if she can just paint or?? We tried pressure-washing it off but it didn't work that great.Do I need primer to paint over an old deck? There's an old old flaky coat of marine paint on it now.?
what you have is an oil based paint... sorry but you will have to scrape it then prime it and repaint it... if not the old will keep flaking even with the new paint on... it will look worse in the long runDo I need primer to paint over an old deck? There's an old old flaky coat of marine paint on it now.?
what i would do is gust get some wire brushes, scrub all the flaky paint of then give it a couple of coats of exterior gloss.

Unless you want a *perfect job* ...then you'll need to strip the whole lot back, prime it, the top coat.

As far as I know, primer is only really neccasary on untreated or reconditioned wood.

    Good luck
Pressure washing will not work and it could damage the wood.

I guess it depends on how good you want it to look when you are completed.

But first of you will have to scrape it there is no way around that sorry.

On the fresh wood you have to use a primer. The primer seals it and protects the wood. In sealing it it also provides a good surface to paint. If you don鈥檛 primer you will need to paint it 3-4 time to get it to look right and it wont last long.

After scraping (which is the most important and difficult part) rent a sprayer or buy one.

I used to own a painting business and you will never use a brush or roller again after spraying. Take the time to think through the job and mask off what should not be painted.

You can also buy spray shield from a paint store that you helper puts in place while you paint. It make it very fast. you will need 2 shields minimum. this method will make it so you don't need to mask. (Recommended)

As a pro using a sprayer your deck would take1-2 days with 2 people. I would also charge (this is a guess site unseen) $1000-$2k to do it for you.

When you spray you need to mix the paint. If its oil based add 1 gal of thinner to 5 gallons it ists latex add 1 gal of water to 5 gallons. You do this so it will spray properly.
How was that flaky coat? Before you went the pressure washer route.

Was it curling up and coming off in thin (like sunburned skin peel)or was it coming off in flat thick layers.

Mom won't be sitting. Hands and knees. Painting is 99% prep. 1%application.

Using a pressure washer on a wood deck is not advisable, but now you've done it. Let it dry a week(of hot weather minimum) Otherwise your new paint will be lifting off because of the moisture in the wood ';steams it off';.

Unpainted wood - primer is a must.

((Look at primer as a ';binder'; between surfaces.)) It is more important than the finish coat. Putting on over an oldish coat, scrape loose what comes loose and feather edge the peel with 60 grit sandpaper

    - you can scrape off the nails if you really want to get them off - but there is no reason to- - so don't be so hard on the paint that is actually sticking good.

    Sweep clean.

Clean any areas that the barbeQ was sitting on with TSP (grease remover) THAT has to be gone.

Now the deck should be clean and free of grease.

    Primer the whole darn thing.

Let the primer dry a week. Doesn't matter whether the primer be oil primer or water based primer. A week. Then 2 coats of finish porch and floor enamel is gonna go on with at least 2 days between coats - a week is better- LATEX 100%Acrylic-gotta be that or it won't last. Vinyl is not as good by far.

There is no shortcuts. This is the shortest route. If it is a covered (roofed over deck) should last about 10 years.
OH HONEY...... You have a big task in front you, bless your soul, the only thing that I can tell you from experience ( I just been down that road about 6 months ago with the new house that we bought) It sounds like to me that what was painted on the deck was oil paint and if you paint latex on it it will just come up, and if you still use oil paint to paint over that stuff that is old in about 6 months it will come peeling up and there goes your new paint job. So this means that you are going to have to scrap up all that old stuff then 2 coats of primer then 2 to 3 coats of new paint and that should last years. But before I went thru all that trouble call Lowes, Home Depot or even a Sherwin Williams in your local area and tell them what you are faced with, they are always coming out with some new product that makes our lives easier that maybe you could put down and cut the job in half. Best luck and I pray that there is some product out there to help you. Kelly

How many coats of primer, how many coats of paint?

I will be painting a gate that I welded together. How many coats of spray primer should I use and how long should I wait in between coats? Also how many coats of spray paint should I apply and how long to wait in between coats? Any advice would be appreciated! How many coats of primer, how many coats of paint?
First start by making sure you remove any loose pieces of weld or metal that are on the gate and make sure it is free of dirt by using a laquer thinner or denatured alcohol to clean it. Then use a good metal primer and paint like Rustoleum. I would probably go with 2 coats of primer and then two coats of paint, letting it dry about 30 minutes to an hour between coats. The can should tell you, though, exactly how long to wait between coats. Make sure you do this in a dust free environment or you're going to have an ugly looking finish when you're done. How many coats of primer, how many coats of paint?
two coats of primer should be plenty about 15 min apart also depending on the color 2 coats of paint should be ok about 15 min apart depending on the tempature
    2 and 2
Generally, I would say only 1 coat of primer, and then 1 or 2 coats of top paint, or as many coats required to cover ';everything'; up. Also you can check the instructions on the can of paint. Usually they say.
One coat of primer shoud be enough. The number of coats of paint depends on the color. You will most likely want to use at least 2 coats to get the full richness of the color. After 2 coats, let dry for 24 hrs, then look for any irregularities. Remember, it is best to get it right from the beginning (you'll be looking at it everyday.)

Is it ok to use white paint instead of primer?

my room is a dark orange and i want to paint it a completely different color- i dont know what yet, but instead of going and getting a gallon o primer can i just paint over it with white paintIs it ok to use white paint instead of primer?
Jeez.13 answers so far and none of them right. Look, if the existing paint is latex, and there is no moisture problem, cheap latex primer is the same thing as cheap white paint. 'Ceiling white' is fine for primer. BUT, for going over you're better off with an oil-base primer, specially going over a dark color, preferably tinted to a similar color. If there is any moisture issue or brown stains on the surface, you want a shellac-based primer such s B.I.N. to keep it down. Anyway, with 'dark orange', you will want to use primer tinted to a similar color if you want to get away with two coat onlyIs it ok to use white paint instead of primer?
Let me tell you, I just moved into a rental house with 2 different colors of orange on the master bedroom and master bathroom walls! I felt like I was in Sesame Street. Chances are that primer will cover it in one coat, then you can use the paint color of your choice. White paint will take many layers. Primer is meant to mute out color, but white paint just lays over the top creating a tint through the paint. Imagine wearing a white T-shirt over a black bra...you can see right through. But if you wear a white sweatshirt instead of a T-shirt, you'll be just fine.
Spend the money on a primer... It will take too many coats of white paint to cover it and most likely would cost more money in the end.

Also, you may want to consider picking out what color you want first before you prime. You can get the primer tinted to match your new color. That will help the new color cover more consistently, specially if it is another dark color.
It would be easier using primer, but if you were to use white paint you would maybe need to do 2-3 layers. But my friends mum paints the walls a different colour every week using only white in between and it looks good to me.
no that's even worse than just painting over it. Ur best option is not to prime it but clean and sand it instead I have painted many apartments and see people job who just prime with tsp and they peal pretty easy.
    No, that won't work.

Primers are made to be thicker and non-transparent so that whatever is under the coat won't show through. Using white paint will require a lot more coat to achieve the same effect.
Primer is used as a base coat and a sealer so if you use just a flat white paint you'll be putting on coat after coat before it covers up the orange
NO, primer is called primer for a reason,, paint is just paint! the two have different jobs!
I've done a bit of painting around my house, and I would suggest using primer and not using white paint. Good luck.
It doesn't serve the same purpose and primer is cheaper so just buy that.
no! i would use the primer! i didnt use it once and it was spoty. trust me, its easyer that way
    No.
    need primer :/

    or it won't cover!
well my friends momma always gets primer firsttttttttttttttt
i dont think so ! sorry

Can I use a white primer paint as regular paint?

You mean as a top coat?

    I wouldn't recommend it.

Primer is designed to dry so as to provide a good surface to accept a regular finish-coat paint.

    Not as a finish-coat itself.

You'll find that dirt will stick to it and it will be impossible to clean with good results. Can I use a white primer paint as regular paint?
I wouldn't recommend it. Primer is usually very thin. Its designed this way so that it will easily flow into the open grain of the wood , if that's whats being painted. It also dries to a very flat, almost chalky texture. This is so that the surface has whats known as ';tooth';, something for following coats of paint to adhere to, or ';grab'; onto. In the case of walls, bare sheet rock ,or ';dry wall'; has a paper covering. the primer goes on very quickly and dries fast so that, #1 it will not saturate the sheet rock and ,#2 it will seal the sheet rock. This way you use less paint. Usually 2 coats of paint are all that's needed after priming. Now you may be asking, '; Why not just use 3 coats of paint?'; Here is why..........primer goes on much faster than paint, it does not have to completely cover,or obscure the surface to be painted and its much cheaper than paint. So 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint is cheaper than 3 coats of paint. And last but not least , primer is a dirt magnet and cannot be cleaned easily. Can I use a white primer paint as regular paint?
Kilz is a primer, and sealer.

And if you like white you can just leave it.

You might even be able to stain it to make colors though.
Sort of. For interior it would probably be okay but since it's very flat it would be hard to clean. For exterior, no, since it won't resist weather and will flake and wear off too soon.
Yes , what you painting , and how do you want it to look when you done?

I want to paint my car dark primer grey and leave it that color, but i was was wondering if i could put a coat of clearcoat over that to make a smooth dark primer look?I am trying to paint my car dark primer grey, can i clearcoat that to make it shiny?
If you clearcoat it, it takes away from the ';satin'; effect of primer. In effect, your car will be a plain-gray car.

You can spray it with a couple coats satin clear, to give it the rod-in-primer effect, but have the durability of a clear over your primer. If you have the skills, you can take the clearcoat and put some 'gloss killer' in the mix, to kill the shine, prior to putting it in the gun and spraying it.

What benefit is it to put primer white paint on an exterior surface of a house before applying color paint?

Primer is probably the most important step. Primer acts like an adhesive. It not only bonds to the under surface better than finish coat, but gives the finish coat something to grip to. It has a dull surface which the finish coat loves. You will paint half as often, and see better results. What benefit is it to put primer white paint on an exterior surface of a house before applying color paint?
it fills in voids, allows the new paint to adhere to the old paint, What benefit is it to put primer white paint on an exterior surface of a house before applying color paint?
If you might not have done a good job at preparing the old surface, the primer give you some forgiveness and allows the new paint to adhere to the old paint or surface. Will also even out the base color so your new color will be more consistant over the entire house.
also if your going to paint your house a diffrent color than white have then tint the primer to the color your painting will help with the final coats
The above reasons, plus it will also cover stains and other discolorations that would otherwise bleed or show through.

What's the colour of an aluminum mtb when it's fully sanded? No paint or primer sprayed after the sanding?

ThanksWhat's the colour of an aluminum mtb when it's fully sanded? No paint or primer sprayed after the sanding?
Bare cast aluminum color -- off silver.

Caution. You can not leave sanded aluminum alone without some protective coating. Every time you touch it, your finger prints will be visible. Aluminum oxide will then begin to form on the surface and the entire thing will dull down and look splotchy and, well, like crap. If you are taking the time to sand the bike at least clear coat it. Use emory cloth to sand with and clear coats are available in gloss. mat, and flat sheen's.What's the colour of an aluminum mtb when it's fully sanded? No paint or primer sprayed after the sanding?
Raw or ball burnished aluminum is greyish silver but can be polished to a high luster.

As mentioned before, not only will unfinished aluminum turn black eventually it will also leave residue on everything it touches. Yuck!
    silver or grayish colored.

How long should I let a coat of primer dry before I paint over it?

As soon as it's dry, which depends on the ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.). Something like a water-based Kilz primer dries and is ready to paint in less than an hour under most conditions (it says to wait 1 hour before applying paint over it on the can).

One thing you can do is apply the primer to what you're painting, and then apply it kind of thick to a test piece of wood or whatever. When the test piece is dry to the touch, you know the area you're painting is dry. And, you can touch the test piece to check for dryness without messing up your project with finger marks (in case you touch it and it's not dry yet). How long should I let a coat of primer dry before I paint over it?
Check the lable on the can of primer. It will tell you how long to wait.

Things that may impact the time are temperature (too low and it won't dry as fast) or the humidity (too high and it won't dry as fast). How long should I let a coat of primer dry before I paint over it?
as long as the temp is above freezing, 24 hours is more then enough i do a lot of painting as a maintenance man and that's what i do,and have never had ant problems..
read the label where it says dry time. some primers can be painted over after 2 hours, some 4 hours, some longer
What type of primer are you using?

    Oil? Acrylic?

    Also what are you painting?

Depending on the surface for best results you would need to use oil based on metal and water based on wood.

Water based you could paint within an hour if it is not too damp out and oil I would wait 24hrs

    Hope this helps...

noCan I use a white primer paint as regular paint?
It's best not to. It's more expensive I think. Can I use a white primer paint as regular paint?
yes, but primer will generally leave a dull finish, not a glossy one
most of the time you will find it has a sealer in it to stop bleed thu, not pigment to color it, so it will look washed out.

  • I have an 81 Chevy that really needs a paint job. I want to primer it all. How would i go about doing that?

I want to drive around with it primered for a while since i don't have all the money for paint. Would it be best to have a professional do it? because i don't want it to be uneven. And how much would that cost?I have an 81 Chevy that really needs a paint job. I want to primer it all. How would i go about doing that?
If you have an air compressor and paint gun you can do it pretty easy and cheap.

I shot my camaro in black primer that I picked up for $55 for the gal can on primer and gal can of thinner (reducer) at the local mom and pop auto parts store.

I been driving it for almost 3 years now like that.

Before you primer a car though, you really need to do your body work and prep the car.

fix any dents, rust, etc.. wash car then wash car again with prep all (grease and wax remover), sand car with elec 1/3 sheet sander or 6'; air DA sander with 80 grit paper, then again with 120 grit paper. Blow/wipe off sanding dust.. Wash with prep all again.

Tape/mask up all glass, trim, mirrors, lights, etc..

Then shoot the primer on it. Most primer surfacers drys quick.. Tacks up in about 10 min.. So getting bugs, dirt, etc in the primer aint too big of a deal.

Here's some pics of mine.. 1st 2 is while I was sanding car, next 3 is after I shot the primer. I sprayed the primer where the car is sitting, outside in the dirt yard.. Primer you can do that, paint you can't. Paint takes longer to dry and the dirt would get into the paint and stick there.

Can I put latex paint over an oil-based primer?

I'm painting kitchen cupboards (previously painted with melamine) and have covered them with an oil based primer. I want to spray paint them but the melamine paint I have just won't work with the sprayer and the results are uneven and blotchy. I've used a latex paint in the past and the spray results were beautiful. 1) Will this work and 2) Will latex be durable enough for kitchen cabinets?

Thanks. Can I put latex paint over an oil-based primer?
Latex paint is fine over oil primer. I use latex over oil for all exterior wood -- I still haven't found an exterior latex primer that suits me.

You do need to make sure the oil primer is well cured. At least 24 hours. The latex will tend to ';pool'; a bit over the oil primer, but as it dries it will grip very well. The only downside is it may take an extra coat, but two thin coats are really better than one thicker coat for duability anyway.

I would question the oil primer on melamine just a bit. You would have been better off with a shellac based primer -- melamine is hard to get a good grip on, shellac will always work, oil may be fine depending upon the product.

For durability, go with a 100% acrylic latex. There are differences even with 100% acrylic. The harder the paint, the better, so a glossy product is better for this than one less glossy. A word of caution -- the gloss level of latex changes the consistency of the paint a bit -- flats spray much better than gloss, so you may want to test a bit before you commit to spraying. On the plus side, glossy acrylics tend to level a bit better, so brush marks take care of themselves.

The acrylic latex may be fine without anything else. I would add two coats of waterborne polyurethane, just to be certain. If you are looking for a glossy look, this will also give them a bit of pop -- almost a glassy surface. You could use a satin water poly if you do not want the gloss, it will still give some extra depth and a good deal of protection. Either way, if you add the poly do so within 24 hours of your final coat of latex to ensure a good bond. Otherwise, you will need to wait a week or so for it to get really hard and give a light sanding.

Can you substitute white paint for primer??

or can you mix it w/ something to get primer??

    do you need primer??

    what does primer do?/

should i use it if i have orange paint on my walls before i paint??Can you substitute white paint for primer??
primer seals the surface and makes the paint adhere better

white paint is not a substitute

if you are painting over the orange with a lighter color I would prime it first to keep the orange from ';bleeding'; throughCan you substitute white paint for primer??
Well primer prepares the walls to receive paint and if its a ugle orange colour prime it twice and then paint it. Its possible you can use the paint (white) but then it may start to peel after a few years, so I would used the primer. Its very cheape then spend the money on scrubable latex paint its wonderful, you can't smell anything and if something gets spashed on the wall you can scrub it off without a problem. Take care Heather
The purpose of primer is to cover up the old paint and any other marks you might have on your wall. You can use white paint but you may need a few extra coats. Primer is not technically ';needed'; you may choose to put extra coats of the paint you are using to get an even appearance. If you have any really dark marks on your wall (IE black sharpie that a child got ahold of.) It might be a good idea to use a Grey primer first if you are painting the wall a light color.
ok, if this is for an inside walls, yes i have used white paint as primer to get rid of wine color i had in my bedroom to then put a lite sky blue color.

what is primer: for the outside of the house, it helps from the last layer of paint to chip and fall off after years of wear. in the inside of the house, it helps hide any inperfections you might have. if you have an orange paint and what to put another kind of color which is totally different, yes i would recommended painting your walls white first, to make sure your new color stands out and does not get blended with the old color.
No. You absolutely cannot. The reason why people use PRIMER is to make the PAINT last longer!! AND not to have to use as many coats of paint in the first place.
Primer is very similar to paint. It seals new walls or repairs to walls and increases the adhesion of paint. For covering something like an orange wall primer will help. Most primers contain additives to block stains. Water stains and varnish will bleed through most paint. Unless you have a bunch of white paint left over from another project, buy the primer. It's cheaper than paint. If you do have extra white paint on hand, and the walls are in good shape, it will help cover the orange.
It worked great on my pepto bismol colored bathroom. I just used cheap white paint and the lavender went on beautifully. I'm telling you this pink was scary. they didn't stop at the walls they had to put it on the ceiling too.

Painting a car, is it necessary to remove all of the old paint before applying primer?

Thanks in advance!Painting a car, is it necessary to remove all of the old paint before applying primer?
no it is not necessary. But what you want to do is sand it down till its dull with a 600 grit sand paper. this will provide a surface with minute grooves so that the new paint will stick. I advise to batch up any dents and remove all the moulding and paint bumpers and trim seperately.Painting a car, is it necessary to remove all of the old paint before applying primer?
It depends on how good a job you want done. The best thing to do would be do a complete strip of all paint and primer, prep the body and remove or repair any dings ,damage or rust and then start the actual painting process of priming, sanding and then applying the finish coats.
I would say Yes to this. Things that are left under the paint show when the new stuff is applied.

Do I need to use paint over top of primer?

I am painting some old cabinets white. I have done two coats of white alkyd primer and the coverage is almost solid. Do I need to finish it with regular white paint for the finish, or is one more coat of primer all I need to do?Do I need to use paint over top of primer?
You definitely need to paint over the top of the primer. Even if the coverage is solid, primer is meant to help the paint bond to the surface. It does not have the sheen and durability that paint has. If you leave just the primer, it may look good now, but it will hold and trap dirt that you won't be able to wash off.

For cupboard doors, especially, I recommend getting an easy-clean, high-durability wall paint from a home improvement or a paint store like Sherwin-Williams, rather than just any old paint. You'll enjoy your paint job a lot longer.Do I need to use paint over top of primer?
You could probably leave it primer, but I think adding a final coat of paint will make it look more finished and have a bit of a shine too it. Adding that little extra gloss really makes it stand out, as primer usually looks pretty flat. I'm not suggesting you go out and buy the ';high gloss'; paint to make it really shine, I just think it will look a little more refined with a little bit of gloss. I think the regular paint will help protect it better than just primer also.
The Primer has protected the wood so it can't gain or lose any moisture. If you're happy with it the way it is then it's fine to leave it.
primer is a bonding agent for paint to adhere to if you do not paint two coats of proper paint dirt will be the bane of the cabinest.

Can a flat white paint be used as a primer to cover up a dark colored wall in bathroom?

After im done im going to use a kitchen and bath semigloss paint. Its just that i had some flat white paint given to me or should i just go out and buy some kiltz primer. I was wanting to save some money. Can a flat white paint be used as a primer to cover up a dark colored wall in bathroom?
First, prep the bathroom walls. Give them a good wash with clean water to take off any soap scum or loose particles. Prep matters.

Then, throw in some water(I am assuming it is latex you are talking about)1 cup per gallon to thin it up a bit so it is more like primer. Then give it a thin coat of paint. Remember, it is the primer -it is not going to cover the color in 1 coat - the additional water just makes it dry faster (and harder) than straight paint out of the can- and it is easier to brush and gives the same coverage.

After it dries(like overnight), look for areas that ';the under color is staining thru'; --if it does.

If that happens, then you need some Kilz and spray the ';bleed thrus';.

Kilz gives a glass like coating over the stain. No more bleed thru.

Let that dry 1/2 hour and then you can put on a coat of semigloss paint.

Do not rush. Drying time is important.

If you are in a rush and everything has to be done today - way of thinking DO NOT PAINT.

Rushing it will cause shivelling, peeling, and other problems. Can a flat white paint be used as a primer to cover up a dark colored wall in bathroom?
no flat paint.... it has to be primer. sorry!

    Be Blessed!
You can do it, but it will just make it harder. You'll be money ahead by using a good primer. Go to your nearest ICI paints store for a good recommendation.
You CAN do it, but it sure isn't practical. For one it will take more labor and money than buying a gallon of primer and doing it once.
Sure you can, but the darker color will bleed thru. It might take 2-3 coaqts. Just make sure you have a latex base you are painting over{old color]. If it is oil, then you will need kiltz or Zin Sealer. And make sure you dull the old finish if it is a semi gloss or gloss. A liquid sander works well before you put the paint on. Have fun
    no...definitely NOT!!
Yes but it will take more paint to cover the dark paint, then if you were to use a real primer that is Grey, I would stick with the primer.
you have too sand the walls down first, and then wipe the walls with a damp cloth to get excess dust off. Then you can apply two coats of your white flat paint as directed.
unfortunately regular flat latex paint cant be used as a primer. go to your local lowes and pick up a high hiding primer made by american tradition, this will be the best product to use
use primer.....flat white won't do much to a dark wall......unless you do 5 coats or more. waste of time...get the primer forsure

  • Should I use Latex base paint or oil base paint for bathroom walls? Can you paint latex over oilbased primer?

I heard that Latex is mildew resistent and easy to clean up but oil base is more durable. This bath does retain a lot of moisture and has average ventilation.Should I use Latex base paint or oil base paint for bathroom walls? Can you paint latex over oilbased primer?
Virtually any paint can be made mildew resistant, however, the mildewcide eventually looses its effectiveness, leaving ithe paint susceptible to mold %26amp; mildew growth.

The solution to controlling and/or eliminating mold %26amp; mildew is not in trying to find the right paint, but in controlling %26amp; reducing the moisture/humidity level...a 40%-55% humidity level, along with good ventilation, will control mold growth.

Your best solution would be to replace your bathroom vent fan with a moisture sensing unit that operates automatically, however, if you do not replace the fan, wire a timer switch to your existing vent fan %26amp; use it...let it run for 10-15 minutes after your hot shower.

Even setting a small room fan in the bathroom will help rid the moisture %26amp; is far better than leaving things as is.

Yes, latex paint can be applied over an oil based primer, but not directly over oil based finish paints.

With latex or oil paints, the glossier the finish, the harder the finish.

Depending on how you decorate your bathroom, a satin or semi-gloss finish is best. Gloss is often too bright for most bathrooms.

Good luck...Should I use Latex base paint or oil base paint for bathroom walls? Can you paint latex over oilbased primer?
First of all, yes, you can paint latex paint over an oil-based PRIMER but not over oil-based PAINT.

Latex is good in a bathroom but I do highly suggest you use kitchen and bathroom latex paint. This special paint is made especially for high humidity rooms and will keep the mold and mildew at bay. Most companies now make kitchen and bathroom paint. You'll want to read this article:

yes you can just buy primer that accepts both get the water based paint and have a mildew resistant additive put in the paint

Can you use emulsion paint as a substitute for primer?

I don't have any primer and I want to paint white gloss over navy blue and suggestions? Thanks in advance. Can you use emulsion paint as a substitute for primer?
as you say you want to paint over navy blue then NO! this must mean it has been painted before so you need an undercoat not a primer.primer is only for bare wood or metal! use a good branded under coat like leyland or crown.making sure it is oil based(check the tin under cleaning it will say use a white spirits not water).remember to lightly sand before painting but not to hard. Can you use emulsion paint as a substitute for primer?
The purpose of a primer is to seal and stabilise the material you are preparing.

    Paint process is :-

    Rub down

    Prime Rub down

    Undercoat Rub down

    Finish Rub Down

    Finish

If you shortcut this by using emulsion for primer all the work you have done afterwards will be wasted. There are shortcuts in DIY but using emulsion instead of primer isn't one id recommend.
    Not recommended.
Yes you can. But you need to make sure you sand down well before you use it.
No emulsion is water based and the gloss will peel of.
You can use emulsion on new wood as a primer.

It will also do as an undercoat but I wouldn't recommend it because it will be easily chipped.

I assume the surface is wood with navy paint on it. I would put 2 coats of undercoat on then gloss. If you are using Satinwood (which is self undercoating) put 1 undercoat on and then a Satinwood. If you don't think it's covered, put a 2nd coat on.
Yes you can I have done it all the primer does is cover a stronger colour and provide a key for the gloss to hold on to Emulsion will do both of these
i have done this before and it worked fine, esp on new wood, but would never admit it to my brother in law who is a painter and probably would shout at me!!!
emulsion is water based and therefore not a good base for gloss paint,it wont last as long as using a good gloss primer that why they have it
hello, A bodge yes you will find the top coat chips easily. If a jobs worth doing do it properly.(moto) Glass paper down, dust down, seal any weepy old knots,it might need two undercoats see results on first? apply top coat, stir paints well before applying.
I've done it before. Gave the MATT emulsion a light sanding and it was fine. If it's the blue that is the emulsion though, be careful as it may be hard to cover over with the white.

Perhaps it would be safer to just to buy some primer. You may end up making a lot of work for yourself otherwise.

Can you paint items in the engine bay with primer and regular spary paint?

im looking of painting a few items for detail in my engine compartment one or two coats of primer and the same for some candy apple red....will it be safe? Can you paint items in the engine bay with primer and regular spary paint?
The only areas of concern are the exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes - any attempt to paint them using anything other than extreme high temperature paint will result in immediate peeling of the paint if the paint does not simply burst into flames! Can you paint items in the engine bay with primer and regular spary paint?
    It is fine.

You can use regular spray paint on items in the engine bay that doesn't get to much heat.

You must use High Tem/ High heat paint to paint items that get really hot such as Headers, Intake manifold, Valve cover, etc.

You can use regular can primer and spray paint to paint brackets, clamps and anything that isn't directly on the engine itself.
just make sure it is a high heat paint so it does not flak off

    How durable is primer paint?

Can an interior Primer paint be used as a 'top coat' in a kitchen for a few months until later painting? How durable is primer paint?
Uncovered primer has a tendency to discolor. If you are using it in a kitchen, it can get covered with airborne grease and moisture and will lose all of its adhesive properties. Short answer-cover it quickly with finish paint. Hope this helps. How durable is primer paint?
primer, when applied to a clean dry surface is actually pretty good provided that you immediately protect it with another coat of paint. If you need to use the base color of primer, you can always cover it with a 'clear' coat of paint. Good luck!
For a few months it will be ok. However, at least one undercoat should be applied before you eventually put a finish coat on.

I need some paint help, what type of primer do I use to paint over dark paint and under white paint?

I just want to paint over dark, ugly green and purple grape stencils in my kitchen. I want a white wall over the primer, really dont know what type to use.I need some paint help, what type of primer do I use to paint over dark paint and under white paint?
If you have a really dark colour just make sure that you get a really good primer - be it latex, oil or shellac based.

Think of your primer as it will help improve the adhesion of your top coat as well as cover up your bottom coat.

A high quality latex primer will accomplish this (not one meant to prime just drywall) - you need one to prime over already painted surfaces.

Another option you have is to use BIN primer made by Zinsser - an excellent choice for this tough one where you are going from dark to light.

As for tinting primers.....There is a limited amount of colour you can put into a gallon of primer for tint (if its high quality like BIN we never recommend tinting) - ranging from 2 ounces to I've seen 4 ounces in some. So you can tint to light pastel colours but you can't tint primers to dark colours. You will lose the qualities of the primers by doing this.

Hope this has helpedI need some paint help, what type of primer do I use to paint over dark paint and under white paint?
Kilz. The solvent-based stuff works the best, but it is very strong chemically (guaranteed bad high). If you can't tolerate it use the latex version, a couple of coats. Remember that all primers can be tinted to match the color of the paint you want to repaint with.

I need to paint over cured latex primer?

I have some rough finish wood ,exterior that has been primed with latex primer for several months. The paint store said I need to sand the wood before top coating. I cannot sand it as it is rough sawmill type finish. Should I re-prime and then topcoat?I need to paint over cured latex primer?
Would reccomend repriming as the primer has been left exposed to the elements for to long. When using primer it should be recoated within days.I need to paint over cured latex primer?
Just wash it with TSP then paint I left mine primed a whole winter season...it took the paint fine. Hopefully, you used a good rubberized primer over that course wood.
Wash off dust or dirt and then paint.

  • What is primer? Painting newb. About to paint apartment but don't know the process.?

So we live in an apt with white walls and it's driving us insane. Thinking of painting two rooms (2 walls each). I'm thinking the lighter the colour, the better to paint back to white when we move out. What is the proper process of painting a wall? What's a primer? And what about restoring it back to white? Do you just paint white over the colour??What is primer? Painting newb. About to paint apartment but don't know the process.?
it's main benefit is to give the wall an even sheen before painting, it also helps cut down on paint if your painting a light color.

it can also help seal staining by using a stain blocker primer.

primer is absorbent so yes it does also help with adhesion of the paintWhat is primer? Painting newb. About to paint apartment but don't know the process.?
Primer looks like paint, but it's very different. Fundamentally, primer's job is to bond well with both the wall and whatever paint you'll put on top of it. It doesn't have to color well, cover well (although may do), dry to a hard durable finish, or anything else - that's paint's job. Primer just has to stick - and it is forumlated accordingly.

If the wall's already painted, and the paint's fairly recent, and you don't have mold or mildew issues (some primers have special additives to combat mold and mildew), then I wouldn't worry about primer. If you do have any reason to suspect that you're paint won't stick well, then a coat of primer is a good idea.
Primer helps paint stick to the surface you are painting. You wont need this. You can paint the walls whatever color you want, its easy to paint back to white.

First use a brush to paint the corners of the room. Then use a roller to paint all the flat area of the walls and ceiling.

Here is a list of what you will need.

    -plastic drop cloth

    -cheap 3'; brush

    -roller

-roller cover (one per paint color, 1/2'; nap is good)

-tray for roller (one per paint color since the plastic ones are cheap)

    -paint

    -ladder
    Hi,

Primer serves a few purposes, it will seal either new drywall or walls that haven't been painted in a long time %26amp; become porous. It's other uses are for adhesion, blocking out strong existing colors, stain blocking like water, nicotine etc. Use quality brands %26amp; tools, it will save you time %26amp; money in the long run.
Let the primer dry for at least 24 hours before painting over it.

If you are painting the room a dark color, you can get the primer 'tinted' to match the color of the paint, thereby needing only one coat of paint. The guy at Home Depot suggested this to me once and it worked.
Primer is very useful in unpainted walls,it helps get an even color coverage,it is usually the same paint diluted with either water or turpentine (oil paint).

Since the work is the same,I rather use regular paint and if it does'nt look too good ,I'll give it a second coat.

Can you spray paint over existing paint with out primer?

i want to re do my hood on my car this year, last year i sanded it all down primed it painted it and it did not come out real good if i remove the wax and residue then sand it lightly can i just paint right over it or do i have to reprime the entire hoodCan you spray paint over existing paint with out primer?
If the paint is in good condition you can simply sand it and spray right over it without priming. Clear coat is a urethane product just like primer so there really isn't much difference between the two compatibility wise. Can you spray paint over existing paint with out primer?
a good paint job is all in the prep work.

what you want to do it wetsand the hood with 220, 400, and then 800 grit wetsandpaper. then you need to clean the surface to be painted thoroughly with a mixture of 1:10 mixture of degreaser to water. give a few coats of primer, starting with light coats and finishing with a heavy coat. let primer cure for a few min. then go over it with your automobile base paint . you need to start with light coats first then build up to heavy coats. alternate directions with the paint. go left to right on one coat, then the next coat work up and down. then finish off the paint with a few coats of clear coat. a rattle can paint job can look pretty good if the right prep is done

A friend gave me some paint. Some etch primer ,primer putty and hardener. What should i mix the hardener with?

Should i mix it with both of these when spraying and at what ratio.I am spraying a metal canopy for a ute.

    THANKYOU

DavidA friend gave me some paint. Some etch primer ,primer putty and hardener. What should i mix the hardener with?
Most generally the paint, etch primer, and putty would all require some type of catalyst (hardener). A good rule of thumb for each: paint 3:1:1 3 parts paint, 1 part hardener, 1 part reducer; etch primer 1:1 1 part primer, 1 part reducer/catalyst; putty 1:1-1/4 1 part putty, 10%-25% hardener. It's not specified what type of hardener you were supplied with so it's hard to say specifically what to mix where. Check the cans and see what it recomends for all.A friend gave me some paint. Some etch primer ,primer putty and hardener. What should i mix the hardener with?
Each item has its own hardner and/or reducer

paint will have both a hardner and a reducer - normal mix ratios are 4:1:1 - 4 parts paint - and local paint stores will have mixing cups with these marks on them

etching primer - is a primer with acid mixed in to etch onto bare metal - it is not used unless there is bare metal and you cannot paint over it - you will need another primer like epoxy to coat the surface - in fact, epoxy is just better to use all around and I wouldn't even use etch primer

primer putty ? hmm that sounds like something used to fill little chips before paint - i dont think you would need that on a canopy - that would have an automotive application
Sometimes manufacturers of this type of filler supply a plastic filling blade. Did you receive this too? If so, they are sometimes coloured the same as what the mixed filler + hardener should look like when mixed to the correct ratio. Usually a pale pinky-beige. Beware the filler once mixed will set reasonably quickly. Try not to over-fill too much as it requires a reasonable amount of elbow grease to sand.
You should mix the putty with the hardener get old piece of wood or plastic put a lump roughly 2'; x 2'; of the putty on it then put a 1.5'; line of hardener on and mix them together you shouldn't be far off with that!

  • Can I leave a primer as the main paint on my bedroom walls?

I have painted my bedroom with primer. I like it the same.

Is it ok if I leave the walls like this? Is it harmful for kids?

Thanks! Can I leave a primer as the main paint on my bedroom walls?
Primer has none of the properties that help it to repel the smudges from fingers/hands, anything rubbing against the wall (bedding, furniture) or marks from little bumps (like the laundry basket, or tossing your shoes in the corner).

All those marks and smudges add up quickly and will look bad very soon. Applying a laytex wall paint will 'seal' the surface, and help keep dust and marks from collecting so quickly. Yes, you will still have marks from children, their toys, their belongings -- but they will be fewer and easier to wipe away. Can I leave a primer as the main paint on my bedroom walls?
A primer will not hold up without a coat of paint over it. Don't be lazy. Do it right.
You should paint it with a semi-gloss latex paint like Behr paint for kitchens and bathrooms because its scrubbable - especially since you have children. We used this stuff to paint the whole downstairs of my house and I have no problem cleaning up dirty little prints my children leave on the walls and trim.

By the way, primer can be tinted to match the color of paint you choose to save a coat of paint! It was a great help in the painting of the dark green walls of our dining room, it took a coat of tinted primer and two coats of paint, instead of 3 paint and we have great coverage and its scrubbable and touch ups are a breeze!

PS%26gt;The prior owners were smokers so the walls were yellowed and we wanted to make sure we wouldn't have coverage issues.
It's not harmful but you should finish the job. Get a friend or two to help you put a coat of paint on. Good luck!
If you like the primer, no problem with leaving it. Remember though, a primer is generally a flat, white water based paint, and if you have small children, it won't take any amount of wiping or scrubbing if someone marks up the wall. Assuming that you bought the paint ';new';, there is nothing in a primer that will harm children etc.
    You should paint over it.
It's probably safe, but it will start peeling. Primer is made of very cheap materials and isn't made to stand up. So when it starts to chip and peel your kids, depending on ages, will probably put it in their mouths. I don't care how non-toxic it might be, it is still not something I want my kids ingesting. So put at least one coat of regular paint over the primer.
yes you can leave it and no its not harmful (unless you eat it )

Can you use flat white paint instead of primer?

hey there, to my knowledge primer has a glue-ish quality that sticks to the wall and to the top color. so i think paint-as-primer would be a waste of money, time and effort because flat paint would absorb the top color among other problems, don't do itCan you use flat white paint instead of primer?
no ,u hav to use the primer first anyway . that's y it's called primer (primary coating )Can you use flat white paint instead of primer?
no, primer soaks in and is especially designed for primer use
Well, anyone can do whatever they want, but if you want good results, you can't use flat white paint instead of primer. Here's why:

Primer is a mixture of matte white paint and glue. This is what makes it adhere to the wall before, as well as lets the new paint you apply stick to it.

Keep in mind that you should use oil-based primer on oil paint or paint that you are unsure of. If you use latex primer on oil paint, it won't stick properly and will eventually scratch, nick and peel off the wall, leaving the original color to stick out. If you aren't sure of the paint already on the wall, use an oil-based primer, as you can paint latex on top of this, but you can't put latex paint on top of oil paint, as it will eventually start to come off.

    Enjoy yourself!
No, you must use a primer that will work with either oil or latex based paints. Some primers dry within two hours and you can begin painting. However, everything has always required 2 coats of primer. If painting over an oil based paint such as in a bathroom ask a pro for help tips. It could peel all the paint off the wall and then you have a real mess.

I read online that you can paint a vinyl shower curtain by spraying it with plastic primer & using latex paint?

Can you paint over oil based primer with interior latex paint?

I am remodeling my bathroom and after stripping some ancient wallpaper from drywall that had not beein primed prior to wallpapering, I have many spots in the drywall that have torn into the top paper layer of the drywall. There are also a few spots where not all of the old wallpaper was completely removed and there is some residual adhesive. I have been told that painting over such spots will cause the old paper to bubble and peel away so after mudding over the bad spots and sanding, I should paint with oil based primer.

My question is.. after mudding and sanding the walls should I use latex primer or oil based primer and if I use oil based primer, is it possible to paint over that with interior latex paint? Can you paint over oil based primer with interior latex paint?
Oil based primer is absolutely the best choice for a damp environment like a bathroom. Latex top coat paints will adhere perfectly to oil based primer. The oil primer will seal the drywall and help prevent mildew from forming on the drywall. Oil is an excellent choice. I use this method all the time. the other answerer's are confusing latex paint over oil paint. that doesn't work at all.Can you paint over oil based primer with interior latex paint?
you should use a oil based primer to prevent the left over paper from absorbing the water from water based and causing it to bubble and fall off..... using an oil primer is best to seal the walls and make sure that what ever paper is left on is safe from falling sealing the wall is the important part of the oil base...... you may use a latex paint after if you wish.....
We used a latex primer on the drywall when we built a room. It worked fine.
I have lived through the very same scenario.

I rented a steamer and removed every last bit of the adhesive. Then I bought a shellac-based primer called ';Kilz'; (BIN makes one, too.) and primed the bare dry wall BEFORE I did the patching. This stuff cleans up with acetone (nail polish remover) and should be used with good ventilation. Kilz is guarenteed to cover just about any kind of stain you can think of including knots in raw wood and cigarette smoke stains.

I built up the deepest holes in layers allowing the compound to dry fir 24 hours between applications. When I had feathered it smooth and allowed it to dry, I primed the spots.

You can then use a water-based Melamine paint designed for kitchens and bathrooms where high humidity is present. I purchase mine at Home Depot.

Not in amillion years will I understand why folks put wallpaper in high humidity locations. Mildew and bacteria are opportunistic organisms just looking for good locations to multiply.
Try sanding the oil paint to give it a ';roughed up'; surface for the new paint to adhere to. You don't have to sand very deep. I would use a kilz product especially since this is in your bathroom. It will help control/prevent mold and mildew. It also is an excellent primer.
You CANNOT use latex over oil based, unless you WANT it to peal.

    It's like cooking on a non-stick surface...things don't stick!
    Hi there

I鈥檓 an interior designer and I just notice your question. You know what if your walls are just a mess there is this special wall paper that you can get to cover the walls and then you can paint on top of this special wall paper. Saying this I seen it and it looks really good after your finish. With this wall paper you will be accomplish a nice cover and the imperfections of the wall. (Remember this wall paper is especially for this kind of wall)

Then you can paint the room the colour you want and the kind of paint you want to us. My preference is latex paint Benjan Moore. Good luck
You need to confirm this at your local paint store because it's been years since I've actually done it:

If I recall correctly, whenever I've had to seal a damaged wall, whether it was banged and exposed metal wall corners or patched wallboard, I've used an oil base primer (in all the rooms) -- just because it's the best and I knew it would stick well to the wall and to any type of paint -- either water or oil based.

    Listen to uncle bob (above)

I need to paint an old flowerbox that is kind of weathered and was never painted. Should I primer it?

Primer on bare wood is a must. Also don't use latex paint on planter box....too much moisture will not let the paint last very long...use a good oil base paint or enamel.

When you go to the hardware store to paint department...tell them what you are going to do. Tell them it's a flower box that will get wet...you need a good oil base primer and good enamel paint. More than likely the primer will be white....then you can use any color you want to paint it after that dries. Allow at least 3 days final drying time before trying to plant anything in it.

How much would it cost to paint my primer honda civic?

i have a 1996 honda civic and it fully primer gray, i don't know where to go or who to ask? i want it two tone black and red! how much would that cost???How much would it cost to paint my primer honda civic?
How long has it been in primer?

If the car has seen a lot of moisture then you will have to start all over. Primer and moisture equals big waste of time.
