How many coats of primer, how many coats of paint?

I will be painting a gate that I welded together. How many coats of spray primer should I use and how long should I wait in between coats? Also how many coats of spray paint should I apply and how long to wait in between coats? Any advice would be appreciated! How many coats of primer, how many coats of paint?
First start by making sure you remove any loose pieces of weld or metal that are on the gate and make sure it is free of dirt by using a laquer thinner or denatured alcohol to clean it. Then use a good metal primer and paint like Rustoleum. I would probably go with 2 coats of primer and then two coats of paint, letting it dry about 30 minutes to an hour between coats. The can should tell you, though, exactly how long to wait between coats. Make sure you do this in a dust free environment or you're going to have an ugly looking finish when you're done. How many coats of primer, how many coats of paint?
two coats of primer should be plenty about 15 min apart also depending on the color 2 coats of paint should be ok about 15 min apart depending on the tempature
2 and 2
Generally, I would say only 1 coat of primer, and then 1 or 2 coats of top paint, or as many coats required to cover ';everything'; up. Also you can check the instructions on the can of paint. Usually they say.
One coat of primer shoud be enough. The number of coats of paint depends on the color. You will most likely want to use at least 2 coats to get the full richness of the color. After 2 coats, let dry for 24 hrs, then look for any irregularities. Remember, it is best to get it right from the beginning (you'll be looking at it everyday.)
