What is primer? Painting newb. About to paint apartment but don't know the process.?

So we live in an apt with white walls and it's driving us insane. Thinking of painting two rooms (2 walls each). I'm thinking the lighter the colour, the better to paint back to white when we move out. What is the proper process of painting a wall? What's a primer? And what about restoring it back to white? Do you just paint white over the colour??What is primer? Painting newb. About to paint apartment but don't know the process.?
it's main benefit is to give the wall an even sheen before painting, it also helps cut down on paint if your painting a light color.

it can also help seal staining by using a stain blocker primer.

primer is absorbent so yes it does also help with adhesion of the paintWhat is primer? Painting newb. About to paint apartment but don't know the process.?
Primer looks like paint, but it's very different. Fundamentally, primer's job is to bond well with both the wall and whatever paint you'll put on top of it. It doesn't have to color well, cover well (although may do), dry to a hard durable finish, or anything else - that's paint's job. Primer just has to stick - and it is forumlated accordingly.

If the wall's already painted, and the paint's fairly recent, and you don't have mold or mildew issues (some primers have special additives to combat mold and mildew), then I wouldn't worry about primer. If you do have any reason to suspect that you're paint won't stick well, then a coat of primer is a good idea.
Primer helps paint stick to the surface you are painting. You wont need this. You can paint the walls whatever color you want, its easy to paint back to white.

First use a brush to paint the corners of the room. Then use a roller to paint all the flat area of the walls and ceiling.

Here is a list of what you will need.

-plastic drop cloth

-cheap 3'; brush

-roller

-roller cover (one per paint color, 1/2'; nap is good)

-tray for roller (one per paint color since the plastic ones are cheap)

-paint

-ladder
Hi,

Primer serves a few purposes, it will seal either new drywall or walls that haven't been painted in a long time %26amp; become porous. It's other uses are for adhesion, blocking out strong existing colors, stain blocking like water, nicotine etc. Use quality brands %26amp; tools, it will save you time %26amp; money in the long run.
Let the primer dry for at least 24 hours before painting over it.

If you are painting the room a dark color, you can get the primer 'tinted' to match the color of the paint, thereby needing only one coat of paint. The guy at Home Depot suggested this to me once and it worked.
Primer is very useful in unpainted walls,it helps get an even color coverage,it is usually the same paint diluted with either water or turpentine (oil paint).

Since the work is the same,I rather use regular paint and if it does'nt look too good ,I'll give it a second coat.
