I need to paint an old flowerbox that is kind of weathered and was never painted. Should I primer it?

Primer on bare wood is a must. Also don't use latex paint on planter box....too much moisture will not let the paint last very long...use a good oil base paint or enamel.

When you go to the hardware store to paint department...tell them what you are going to do. Tell them it's a flower box that will get wet...you need a good oil base primer and good enamel paint. More than likely the primer will be white....then you can use any color you want to paint it after that dries. Allow at least 3 days final drying time before trying to plant anything in it.
