Is it ok to use white paint instead of primer?

my room is a dark orange and i want to paint it a completely different color- i dont know what yet, but instead of going and getting a gallon o primer can i just paint over it with white paintIs it ok to use white paint instead of primer?
Jeez.13 answers so far and none of them right. Look, if the existing paint is latex, and there is no moisture problem, cheap latex primer is the same thing as cheap white paint. 'Ceiling white' is fine for primer. BUT, for going over you're better off with an oil-base primer, specially going over a dark color, preferably tinted to a similar color. If there is any moisture issue or brown stains on the surface, you want a shellac-based primer such s B.I.N. to keep it down. Anyway, with 'dark orange', you will want to use primer tinted to a similar color if you want to get away with two coat onlyIs it ok to use white paint instead of primer?
Let me tell you, I just moved into a rental house with 2 different colors of orange on the master bedroom and master bathroom walls! I felt like I was in Sesame Street. Chances are that primer will cover it in one coat, then you can use the paint color of your choice. White paint will take many layers. Primer is meant to mute out color, but white paint just lays over the top creating a tint through the paint. Imagine wearing a white T-shirt over a black bra...you can see right through. But if you wear a white sweatshirt instead of a T-shirt, you'll be just fine.
Spend the money on a primer... It will take too many coats of white paint to cover it and most likely would cost more money in the end.

Also, you may want to consider picking out what color you want first before you prime. You can get the primer tinted to match your new color. That will help the new color cover more consistently, specially if it is another dark color.
It would be easier using primer, but if you were to use white paint you would maybe need to do 2-3 layers. But my friends mum paints the walls a different colour every week using only white in between and it looks good to me.
no that's even worse than just painting over it. Ur best option is not to prime it but clean and sand it instead I have painted many apartments and see people job who just prime with tsp and they peal pretty easy.
No, that won't work.

Primers are made to be thicker and non-transparent so that whatever is under the coat won't show through. Using white paint will require a lot more coat to achieve the same effect.
Primer is used as a base coat and a sealer so if you use just a flat white paint you'll be putting on coat after coat before it covers up the orange
NO, primer is called primer for a reason,, paint is just paint! the two have different jobs!
I've done a bit of painting around my house, and I would suggest using primer and not using white paint. Good luck.
It doesn't serve the same purpose and primer is cheaper so just buy that.
no! i would use the primer! i didnt use it once and it was spoty. trust me, its easyer that way
No.

or it won't cover!
