Can you substitute white paint for primer??

or can you mix it w/ something to get primer??

do you need primer??

what does primer do?/

should i use it if i have orange paint on my walls before i paint??Can you substitute white paint for primer??
primer seals the surface and makes the paint adhere better

white paint is not a substitute

if you are painting over the orange with a lighter color I would prime it first to keep the orange from ';bleeding'; throughCan you substitute white paint for primer??
Well primer prepares the walls to receive paint and if its a ugle orange colour prime it twice and then paint it. Its possible you can use the paint (white) but then it may start to peel after a few years, so I would used the primer. Its very cheape then spend the money on scrubable latex paint its wonderful, you can't smell anything and if something gets spashed on the wall you can scrub it off without a problem. Take care Heather
The purpose of primer is to cover up the old paint and any other marks you might have on your wall. You can use white paint but you may need a few extra coats. Primer is not technically ';needed'; you may choose to put extra coats of the paint you are using to get an even appearance. If you have any really dark marks on your wall (IE black sharpie that a child got ahold of.) It might be a good idea to use a Grey primer first if you are painting the wall a light color.
ok, if this is for an inside walls, yes i have used white paint as primer to get rid of wine color i had in my bedroom to then put a lite sky blue color.

what is primer: for the outside of the house, it helps from the last layer of paint to chip and fall off after years of wear. in the inside of the house, it helps hide any inperfections you might have. if you have an orange paint and what to put another kind of color which is totally different, yes i would recommended painting your walls white first, to make sure your new color stands out and does not get blended with the old color.
No. You absolutely cannot. The reason why people use PRIMER is to make the PAINT last longer!! AND not to have to use as many coats of paint in the first place.
Primer is very similar to paint. It seals new walls or repairs to walls and increases the adhesion of paint. For covering something like an orange wall primer will help. Most primers contain additives to block stains. Water stains and varnish will bleed through most paint. Unless you have a bunch of white paint left over from another project, buy the primer. It's cheaper than paint. If you do have extra white paint on hand, and the walls are in good shape, it will help cover the orange.
It worked great on my pepto bismol colored bathroom. I just used cheap white paint and the lavender went on beautifully. I'm telling you this pink was scary. they didn't stop at the walls they had to put it on the ceiling too.
