Can a flat white paint be used as a primer to cover up a dark colored wall in bathroom?

After im done im going to use a kitchen and bath semigloss paint. Its just that i had some flat white paint given to me or should i just go out and buy some kiltz primer. I was wanting to save some money.Can a flat white paint be used as a primer to cover up a dark colored wall in bathroom?
First, prep the bathroom walls. Give them a good wash with clean water to take off any soap scum or loose particles. Prep matters.


Then, throw in some water(I am assuming it is latex you are talking about)1 cup per gallon to thin it up a bit so it is more like primer. Then give it a thin coat of paint. Remember, it is the primer -it is not going to cover the color in 1 coat - the additional water just makes it dry faster (and harder) than straight paint out of the can- and it is easier to brush and gives the same coverage.





After it dries(like overnight), look for areas that ';the under color is staining thru'; --if it does.


If that happens, then you need some Kilz and spray the ';bleed thrus';.





Kilz gives a glass like coating over the stain. No more bleed thru.





Let that dry 1/2 hour and then you can put on a coat of semigloss paint.





Do not rush. Drying time is important.





If you are in a rush and everything has to be done today - way of thinking DO NOT PAINT.

You can do it, but it will just make it harder. You'll be money ahead by using a good primer. Go to your nearest ICI paints store for a good recommendation.
You CAN do it, but it sure isn't practical. For one it will take more labor and money than buying a gallon of primer and doing it once.
Sure you can, but the darker color will bleed thru. It might take 2-3 coaqts. Just make sure you have a latex base you are painting over{old color]. If it is oil, then you will need kiltz or Zin Sealer. And make sure you dull the old finish if it is a semi gloss or gloss. A liquid sander works well before you put the paint on. Have fun

Yes but it will take more paint to cover the dark paint, then if you were to use a real primer that is Grey, I would stick with the primer.
you have too sand the walls down first, and then wipe the walls with a damp cloth to get excess dust off. Then you can apply two coats of your white flat paint as directed.
unfortunately regular flat latex paint cant be used as a primer. go to your local lowes and pick up a high hiding primer made by american tradition, this will be the best product to use
use primer.....flat white won't do much to a dark wall......unless you do 5 coats or more. waste of time...get the primer forsure
