I have dowdy brown wooden doors and need to know the cheapest and easiest way to revamp them. I think that I could use a good primer to avoid endless coats of paint. Also hopeing that I dont have to rub them down, easiest suggestions PLEASE. Many Many Thanks Sarah-Jane.What's the best primer/paint to use on horrid brown doors???
Elbow grease and a bloody good husband! What's the best primer/paint to use on horrid brown doors???
We seem to be getting mainly answers from USA for some reason even though we are on UK only site. The yanks have some great paints. I suspect that you are from UK, in which case wash down doors with washing soda solution to remove microscopic fat and dirt particles, when dry apply normal white undercoat using mini-foam roller and brush to get into grooves. apply 2 coats. Finish with Dulux eggshell, (expensive) using roller, you will not be disappointed.
i had the same doors - awful arent they! i used an electric sander on them, then 1 coat of undercoat and 2 coats of satin finish which is a wee bit nicer than gloss - i used a roller so didnt have any brush strokes - very happy with doors now
Listen to lowcarber, he knows his stuff, and I would have given you similar advice, I do decorating for a living, and this is what I would have done.

There is no need to prime over stained doors, but you must sand down to get rid of the shinyness to get a key.
Brown is a strong colour and so the doors will need two or three applications of dark green.
all i ever do before painting doors give it the once over with emulsion it dries in seconds and the gloss flies over it
I work for Benjamin Moore Paints %26amp; they make a very good alkyd primer called Fresh Start. It's number 024. You can get it at any Benjamin Moore Signature store or Ace Hardware or your local hardware store that sells BM Paints.

It has a stain blocker in it. One coat of this primer over those dark doors %26amp; you're ready for a new color. Also Benjamin Moore Regal Paint (Interior) is a great paint.

We also came out with a new paint called Aura. It's the best in the market. It's been used on the TV show ';This Old House';

Hope this info helps you with your decision.
kilz

it is made to cover dark colors. one coat should give you a perfect white prime coat.
Kilz primer will cover the brown in 1 coat, possible 2. Depending on what color you want to door to end up, you may need to tint the primer. My sister had to use a grey primer for maroon paint.
TNT
Depending on if these are unpainted brown doors or stained brown doors........ first just make sure that there is nothing flaking off of them - if so then you will need to sand those area's down.

Wash the door with a good cleaner and let dry.

Prime with BIN..made by Zinsser....its a shelac based primer that will adhere to any surface and then you can proceed with any type of paint.

Paint with a good quality latex semi gloss - two coats.

Semi gloss on doors gives you more washability because people handle doors more often.
burn the old paint off (gas gun %26amp; scraper) sand %26amp; repaint...easy.
